CirColombia at the New Victory

The New Victory starts its new season this week.  I have extolled their virtues many times on these pages and others– I do a lot of reviews of their shows.  (Hey, they present lots of great stuff, and they have been giving me tickets to see stuff in hopes I write about it.  Perfect system for me!  But, gentle readers,  rest assured that my opinions are my own, and not influenced by the free nature of the tickets)

Circolombia

They are starting their season this year with a Colombian Youth Circus, Circolombia’s show URBAN.  The show (and the company Circolombia) is comprised of graduates of the Colombian Circus School Circo Para Todos, which is the first professional circus school in the world specifically dedicated to disadvantaged children and displaced youths.

Circo Para Todos was established by Circolombia’s director, Felicity Simpson, and has become Colombia’s National Circus School.  Circo Para Todos works with young people from the most in-need barrios of the region, allowing them to transcend their difficult backgrounds in the most spectacular way: as world-class artists on stage performing with a volcanic energy that can be felt in the very back row. It is now a key institution in South American and world circus training, and its model has been used to create similar circus schools in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and South Africa. All of Circolombia’s URBAN artists
graduated from Circo Para Todos.

Urban, the show at the New Victory,  features mostly teens and early 20’s performers singing, dancing, and performing spectacular circus stunts.  I’m going to see it later today, and will report back.
