Circus Music Showdown at the Jalopy Theatre on Jan 24 (NYC)

A fantastic evening of circus and cabaret music will be presented on January 24, when three circus/cabaret groups all collide at the Jalopy Theatre.

The three groups are Cirkestra (from Boston), Brooklyn’s own ukelele temptress Sweet Soubrette, and Brooklyn-based ragtime-punk sextet Apocalypse Five And Dime.

Founded by a former circus clown Peter Bufano, Cirkestra has a Balkan-gypsy-klezmer-jazz sound backed up by authentic circus cred. Its members have performed and accompanied Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Big Apple Circus, Circus Smirkus, Kinoshita Circus, and the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus. Cirkestra also provided the original instrumental soundtrack to the 2012 PBS documentary Circus Dreams. The Boston Globe says Cirkestra is “beautiful” and “highly praised.”

Cabaret rock band Sweet Soubrette has been described as “one part circus… one part poet… third part rockstar” (CultureMob). Front woman Ellia Bisker got her performance chops playing ukulele in the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, and the glittery eyelashes she wears onstage hint at her vaudevillean origins; percussionist Mike Dobson is another circus veteran. A three-piece horn section will back up Sweet Soubrette at this show (“What’s better than a ukulele band backed by a horn section? Nothing. Not a thing.” –The Brooklyn Paper).

Apocalypse Five and Dime, a “Brooklyn-based ragtime-punk sextet” (Seven Days) with roots in NYC’s unconventional brass band scene, delivers melodic, harmony-laced tunes and wild, foot-stomping numbers backed by circus-inspired instrumentation (including a brass section and marching bass drum). Songwriter Phil Andrews is a member of the Bread and Puppet Circus band whose arrangements also draw on the sounds of Balkan brass bands, old time folk, hardcore punk and metal, early ragtime and jazz, and modern dance pop.
